I`m thinking of running a magical girls game at some point. While I do have a few games that are meant for such campaigns, such as Big Eyes Small Mouth or even Tails of Equestria, I keep wondering if a superhero RPG could also fill the need. The mechanical difference between a superhero and a magical girl is negligible, at least when looking at them for purposes of gaming. The real difference between Sailor Moon and the Green Lantern or Card Captor Sakura and Captain American is cultural. The cultural side impacts the roleplaying, not the powers.
The next question, which superhero RPG? I've demo'ed a few here, including Valiant Universe: The Roleplaying Game and Superbabes, and I have access to several more, including Champions. The goal here is to have flexibility while still being quick to create a character in. Thus, the Valiant RPG. I may try to recreate the character under a different system for comparison's sake, but for now, the Valiant RPG has the flexibility and quickness I want.

Old Concept, New Game III - Brenna
Continuing from last week, I'm heading in a different direction. Unlike Jyslyn and Michaelus, Brenna Halliday wasn't a AD&D character ever. Instead, she came about as I toyed with the mechanics of Champions. I also did get to play her in a play-by-email campaign. Brenna re-appeared for NaNo 2009 in Tales of the Soul Blade. The commentary ignores Brenna's RPG beginnings, but does go into the thought processes that created her. Her powers, though, were a different matter.
The idea of the Soul Blade, at least when generated by Brenna, was a stun-only attack that could go through most materials but could be blocked by someone with high will, with an alternate form that could kill but was also blocked normally. The blade's colour reflected the attack, silver-white for the stun, blood red for the lethal, reflecting Brenna's feelings about each form. In Champions, this was represented by a Multipower with two slots, one a No Normal Defense zero-range Energy Blast, the other a zero-range Ranged Killing Attack*. The Soul Blade wasn't Brenna's only ability, though. She also had psychometry, letting her read the past of an object by touch, and second sight, letting her see spirits and the auras of people, both detailed in The Ultimate Mentalist.
For the new game, I'll use the Valiant Universe the Roleplaying Game. I've highlighted it in the past a few times, once to work out Nasty, once to see how well it could handle being used for Reboot, and once to contrast it with an older RPG. Valiant has a simpler character generation system than Champions but still has the older game's flexibility. The system worked well wth Nasty, so lets see how it handles Brenna.

Test Run - Hacking Valiant Universe RPG
To put this post into perspective, I've been re-watching Reboot after working on Ringette and several PCs for a friend's game at CanGames. A though occurred to me that the Valiant Universe RPG could be easily used to set a game in /Reboot/'s setting. The game can handle everything from binomes to sprites.
Valiant has several power levels, from sidekick (as Nasty was built) through hero and superhero (as Ringette is) to legend. Sidekick covers the likes of Mike the TV and first season's Enzo, the characters who have limited abilities. Hero covers most of the experienced characters, like Dot, Bob, and Captain Gavin Capacitor. Superhero handles the likes of Glitch!Bob, Megabyte, and Hexadecimal. Legend, the ultimate power level, easily handles Daemon, who wasn't one to be trifled with. The levels can be mixed, though a sidekick is going to feel limited compared to a superhero. The series does show the difference, with Dot, Bob, and Enzo together in a game. After the break, I'll create a young Guardian, just fresh from the Academy.

Test Run - Valiant Universe RPG
Hey there! Welcome to my second test run of the Valiant Universe Roleplaying Game. The first time out, I used Nasty from Subject 13 and found that the game models her with no problems at all. This time around, I want to try a higher power level of character. For this, I shall use Ringette.
Last time I did a test run, it was for the older RPG, Superbabes, using Ringette as the sample character. Ringette is a superhero, with a far broader range of powers than Nasty. The use of her here is to show the contrast between Superbabes and Valiant Universe in their approaches. Superbabes was a point-buy system that took a few hours to complete. By using Ringette again, I already have a good idea of her abilities and powers. After the break, I'll go through the same steps as I did before.
