Fun With Traveller - The Embittered Soldier

So far in my pre work for a potential Traveller story, I've created three characters, Philomena, Spencer, and Miryim.  Spencer now has a decent crew for his detached Scout/Courier - pilot (Spencer, with Philomena and Miryim capable of filling in), astrogator (Spencer), engineer (Miryim), and gunner (Philomena and Miryim are both capable).  However, if a fight breaks out, they're relying solely on basic training.  They could use someone who is more comfortable in combat.  Thus, Cuthbert "Cuddy" Mallory.

Name: Cuthbert Mallory
Species: Human, Imperial
Homeworld: Shirene/Lunion (B984510-B, Ag, Ni, Ga)
Going back, Philomena had joined the Imperial Navy to prove herself to her noble classmates, Spencer joined the Scouts to leave his homeworld, and Miryim served her mandatory term in the Darrian Confederation Navy before heading out to do her own thing.  Cuddy, though, is taking a different approach.  He's going to follow a family tradition.  Cuddy's homeworld, Shirene, is an agricultural world, Earth-like, with no native heavy industries.  Fortunately, Shirene can export its agricultural goods to Lunion in exchange for manufactured goods.

  Soc 7/+0
Cuddy is a more physical person than the others, though not as well educated.  Fortunately, the Imperial Army recruiters are looking for the physical.  It's only later when Cuddy wants to be promoted or even commissioned that his Education stat comes into play.  Cuddy applies to join and is easily accepted by the Imperial Army and is sent off for basic training.  After that, Cuddy joins the Poor Bloody Infantry.
Term 1: Assigned to an urbanized planet torn by war
The first term sends Cuddy away from Shirene to another world, where he picks up a bit of street smarts while peacekeeping.  However, he just misses out on both a commission and a promotion.
Term 2: Given advanced training in a specialist skill; commissioned
Hoping to help prepare Cuddy for new responsibilities, the Army sends him for advanced training.  It helps; Cuddy gets commissioned to a full Lieutenant.  He decides to stay in the career, now that it is going somewhere.
Term 3: Surrounded and outnumbered, held out until relief arrived; promoted
This term sees Cuddy and his men holding out under siege until the Imperial Marines can arrive and do a combat drop to take the heat off.  Just keeping his men alive is enough to get Cuddy promoted to Captain.  Cuddy, though, is looking to switch out of the Infantry and get behind something thicker in the Cavalry.
Term 4: Given advanced training in a specialist skill; promoted
It's a little rougher in the Armoured Cavalry, but Cuddy survived.  Again, the Army gives him advanced training, this time to help him adapt to his new post.  Cuddy is also given a promotion to Major.
Term 5: Mishap: Unit slaughtered in a disastrous battle, blamed on commander
Things take a turn for the worse as Cuddy's commander throws him under a bus for the commander's poor decisions that lead to Cuddy's command being destroyed.  Cuddy is out of the Imperial Army.  He starts packing up and musters out.

Cuddy has a nice, tidy sum in life savings, plus was able to take with him his service weapon and a nice set of armour.  He doesn't, though, have a job or a skill set to let him get a job as a civilian.

Unless he's working at a store in a really bad neighbourhood, his skills are military.  He might get mileage out of his Leadership skill, and his Gunnery skill can get him on board a tramp freighter whose captain is cautious to the point of paranoia, but Cuddy is still best suited for military work.  Interestingly, Cuddy is better at Gunnery than Philomena and Miryim, the former naval recruits.

Next step, to be done in a different post, is to connect the characters, figure out how they know each other.

Below, for the curious, is Cuddy's full character sheet in one block.

  1. Cuddy's a crack shot! Crikey. He had command sense, but not too keen on the specifics. Fortunately, he has enough experience to inform him as to how an objective can be accomplished, enough anyway for civilian work.
